The eco-design of our products, a benefit for our customers
A carbon footprint every morning?
To make progress, we need to measure. SLAT has set up a tool to measure its carbon footprint that is fully interfaced with its various software programs.
In particular :
- ERP - to manage all goods receipts, suppliers, deliveries to customers, items, etc.
- Time Management - to know the number of days of presence, telecommuting, mission...
- Payroll - the number of carpool days, bike miles, public transportation trips, home-to-work distance
- Expense reports - business trips, mode of transportation, fuel, distance traveled
- Consumption records - water, gas, electricity
- Waste records - nature, weight, % recycled
Thanks to this automated data collection, we can know our carbon emissions from day to day, and establish our dashboards each month.
We can thus see, almost in real time, the impact of our decisions in terms of carbon emissions, and compare them to our economic charts so that the company's management is based on these two criteria, ecological and economic.
Reducing our carbon footprint
This dashboard also allows us to set new quantified objectives. Each member of the management committee has a concrete objective to reach with a measurement of the targeted carbon footprint.
This dashboard also highlights where the company can make the most progress, even if it means investing in actions that are costly in terms of carbon footprint today, but which will result in significant recurring carbon savings in the future.
Some examples:
- We have switched to hybrid vehicles for all our traveling salespeople. Reducing their fossil fuel consumption is part of their annual goals.
- We are eliminating products that travel by air to be delivered to us by switching suppliers or redesigning our products to avoid them.
- In 2023, we will replace our current gas-fired heating system with a much lower-emitting heat pump.
- ...
It is a continuous improvement process, and each year new objectives are set.
How employees get involved
In order to involve employees in this effort to reduce the carbon footprint, the company's management has increased its efforts to reduce the carbon footprint of commuting. This subject is now part of the mandatory annual negotiations.
Since the COVID crisis, when we were forced to ask all employees who could telecommute to stay home, we have returned to a rate of about 50% telecommuting, modulated according to the mission of each employee. This measure has saved 41 tons of CO2e in 2021.
We have also increased the reimbursement of home-work trips by public transport to 100%.
We promote carpooling through financial participation.
We help employees convert to cycling. By granting an interest-free loan over 24 months. By participating financially in the purchase of an electric or non-electric bicycle, against the commitment to use it at least 50% of the time. We finance the displacements made by bike at 1€/km... An electric bike is also loaned free of charge to convince those who think that climbing the hill to get to work is too strenuous.
This measure has enabled 20% of SLAT's workforce to adopt the bicycle in 2022, compared to less than 3% three years ago.
In order to raise awareness among the company's employees, the NetZero group organizes a quarterly information session detailing ongoing environmental actions and results.
